Here you’ll find answers to the questions we hear most often, so you can feel confident and prepared every step of your birth and postpartum journey.

FAQs

What exactly does a doula do during labour and birth?

A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout labour and birth. This includes:

  • Comfort measures like massage, positioning, breathing techniques, and relaxation strategies

  • Emotional reassurance and encouragement to help you stay calm and confident

  • Guidance for partners on how to provide effective support

  • Advocacy and communication assistance with your healthcare team, while always respecting your birth choices

Do I still need a midwife or doctor if I hire a doula?

Yes. Doulas do not provide medical care and cannot perform medical tasks or make clinical decisions. Your doula works alongside your midwife, doctor, or nurse to enhance your birth experience, offering personalized support while your healthcare provider manages medical care.

How long will you be present during labour?

Our birth support packages vary in what duration of support we offer, from anywhere between 10 hours and unlimited! Labour duration varies, and if it extends beyond the included hours, additional support can be provided at $55/hour. We also discuss potential arrangements for a secondary doula if needed, so you always have continuous, rested support.

What if my doula can’t make it to my labour and delivery?

While your primary doula make every effort to be available for your birth, labour can be unpredictable. In the unlikely event that your primary doula is unavailable:

  • A backup, qualified doula from The Haven team, or a trusted outsourced doula, will step in to provide continuous support.

  • All backup doulas are trained in our techniques, philosophies, and communication style to ensure consistent, high-quality care.

  • We discuss backup arrangements during prenatal visits so you feel prepared and confident, no matter what.

Can my partner or family be involved?

Absolutely! Your partner and family are encouraged to participate. A doula can:

  • Coach your partner on comfort techniques and emotional support

  • Help family members understand how to be involved without adding stress

  • Ensure everyone feels confident and included while keeping the focus on your preferences

What if my labour lasts longer than expected?

Labour can be unpredictable. If it exceeds the included hours:

  • Additional time is billed at $60/hour

  • In some cases, a secondary doula may step in so that support is continuous while the primary doula rests

  • We discuss these possibilities during prenatal visits to ensure you feel prepared and confident

Do you offer payment plans? What payment options do you accept?

Yes! We understand that doula support is an important investment, and we want to make it as accessible as possible. We offer flexible payment plans, allowing you to spread your payments out in smaller installments leading up to your due date.

We accept e-transfers and online payments (credit cards and debit cards). A non-refundable retainer fee is required to secure your spot, with the remaining balance paid according to your chosen plan. We’re happy to discuss options with you during your consultation to find a payment schedule that works best for your family.

How do I book with you?

Booking is simple: reach out via our contact form or send us an email at info@thehavendoulas.com. A deposit secures your dates, and we’ll schedule a prenatal meeting to review your goals and create a tailored plan for your birth journey.
